The Price for Being Short

August 16th, 2012 at 05:52 pm

I am a short woman. Like 4'7" short. And apparently my children have inherited that from me. All the jeans we bought DD last weekend have to be hemmed. She also took some that she has had but were too long. So 5 pair of pants and one pair of sweat pants have to be hemmed. I am sure that will cost a pretty penny. I had to alter my budget to include that.

My budget for the next month is still looking pretty good. I am short for the start of October but I hope to make some up with grocery shopping by not using the full budgeted amount. My mom said that she didn't know if she was going to be able to help me with DD health insurance next month so I didn't put it in my budget and I am still okay. I also made dental appointments for me and DD. She no longer has dental insurance so that will be coming out of pocket. I have dental insurance. I hope that she doesn't need anything major done.

Today should be a NSD. It seems that so many little things come up to ruin my NSD's. I try to plan ahead but at the last minute DD will need something. So hopefully she doesn't need anything tonight.

Plan for dinner: Roast beef; green bean casserole and mashed potatoes. Can't eat until after my weigh in though so I will be hungry.

No eating out: 15/15 (20/20 total)
Tracking food: No 9/15
NSD: 3/15

Wow. I have the opposite problem. at 5'9" I have trouble finding pants long enough and often have to buy spendier brands just to find some that aren't showing too much sock.

i have the same problem as thriftoRama - all pants are too short....it is easier to hem than to add length, so in my book you're lucky! Smile
can you get your DD on board with the NSDs? It would help you out with yours, and it will start teaching her about managing money. never too late or early to start that!

    keep up the good work!

My husband often has to get clothes altered too. He's a tiny bit taller than me (5'3"), but I can usually find petite sizes that fit me (though not as much variety); they don't typically offer the same for men. Big Grin

Wowzer. Looks like we are a community of both tiny people and very large people. Anyone in between ? ; )

I'm a very average 5'4"! Good luck with your weigh in, NGG!!

5'8" here. Sometimes a little short if the pants ride up, but generally not too bad. Helps that when you get older, it doesn't seem like such a big deal. Just tell me quietly when my belt skims my chin. Big Grin

I'm a tall one too--somewhere between 5'8" and 5'9". I used to always buy talls--but Old Navy and other gap brands run long.

I've been hemming the pants that we got on the weekend too. It hard to find one that fits perfectly and DH is very particular about the length of his pants he doesn't like it when it drags so I had to cut them. I'm doing it by hand, I'm too cheap to pay $10-$20 to get it done professionally. Only time I don't mind paying for it is for DH's suits.

With a spool of 'Stitch witchery' or glued hemming tape usually available at W/Mart,[$2.] & quality scissors shortening pants/jeans becomes a DIY job. Use measurements from an existing pair with perfect fit. Turn new pants inside-out, measure from inside seam and add 2 inches. Draw and cut that line.
Iron on hemming tape/Stitch Witchery supported with a damp cloth and it's done.
