Am I missing something

July 15th, 2011 at 02:31 pm

I went to the grocery store last night and was looking for a pork loin to try to make sweet and sour pork. There was quite a selection of pre marinated loins, but I didn't want one of them. The only other loin was well over $20!! Granted I could have gotten 2 or maybe even 3 meals out of it, I wasn't going to pay that much for a pork loin. Am I missing something? Are pork loins just that expensive? I got some chicken tenders instead and will try to make sweet and sour chicken.

I went $30 over my budget for the grocery shopping this pay period, but I got alot of food. I restocked our meat selection in the freezer so we will be good to go. I mistakenly thought that we didn't have any hamburger meat in the freezer only to find 3 pounds when I was putting the 4 pounds I bought in the freezer. So I guess we will be eating alot of hamburger meat in the next few weeks!

Woke up this morning to a random boy sleeping on my sofa. I am sure that it is one of my son's friends. Speaking of my son, there was a note left on our door yesterday by the sheriff's office looking for him. He swears that he hasn't done anything. But I guess we will find out today when he calls them. The suspense is killing me.

Oh, the joys of trying to be a mother and a financially responsible individual!

While I am a firm believer that going over-budget is quite avoidable, I know you have a lot going on. So I think we can let you slide. Wink

Yes, pork loin roasts are expensive. You aren't mistaken. I don't know where you buy your meat, but we have been going to an actual butcher shop here in town. That why we can have them cut the meat in the sizes we want. It's nice when I can get half a pound of sausage packaged because that's what I need, and not have to buy a whole pound, then repackage it at home. That's the problem with so many grocery stores...they have prepackaged meat. I am not feeding a huge family so I don't need 4 pork chops or 10 chicken legs or whatever.

Hope all is well with the son and the sheriff's note.

We have started going to a local butcher for our meat, as well, and it is both cheaper and better quality. It leads me to wonder about the really big groceries... yeah, they are convenient, but are they also always the best choice for food and the insurance of quality? Anyway, I hope everything is OK with your son.

Try looking for a pork butt roast instead of a loin roast. I have found especially in Chinese or other Asian style cooking that it turns out even better and it is far cheaper. We make a delicious Chinese barbecue pork and a great Mexican burrito from pork butt roast done in the crockpot.
