A decision made

July 26th, 2010 at 05:51 pm

I have made a decision. I am going to have our small dog put to sleep. This has not been an easy decision. She is miserable though. She can't stop itching. She has rubbed the hair competely off her tail and rear end. I don't have the money to take her to the vet once a month for the shot that clears it up. I will probably be very emotional tomorrow, when I take her. She is 11 years old and all of it has been with us. I don't know if what I am doing is the right thing, but it is the right thing for us financially. I can't continue to let her suffer and I can't afford to get her what she needs. We don't have any no kill shelters around here. It'll cost me $25 to have her put down.

Please no negative posts...I already feel like a completely irresponsible pet owner.

I'm not even an animal lover, but have you even gotten any ADVICE from a vet? I hear a vet (on AM radio here) say all the time that many times animals have allergies to commercial foods. (I know a lot have corn and supposedly dogs bodies just do not necessarily mix well with so much corn. But it could be other ingredients or the lack of certain needed nutrients.) The answer might be as simple as changing foods.... Or bathing her more frequently/less frequently. Or keeping her out of the area of your yard that has St Augustine grass/rye grass/bluegrass.... Whatever...There may be an answer that is cheap and has nothing to do with injections or pharmaceuticals. Sorry if am am offending by suggesting you may not have looked into enough alternatives.

Thank you for the advice. I have spoken with two different vets. They have both said that she is allergic to fleas and that a monthly shot is what she needs as well as antibiotics when it flares up. When I was told it was fleas, I starting putting all the animals on Frontline. I called an exterminator to spray the house AND the yard. While I don't see any fleas anymore, she hasn't gotten any better. I am just at my wits end. Both vets said that if it was the food, the reaction would be around her mouth, not where she is scratching.

We had a similar issue with one of our dogs when I was a kid, and we treated it by mixing brewer's yeast into his food. It solved his issue, but I don't know that it was as serious as the one you've described. I also understand that the brewer's yeast can also have serious side effects. It is certainly a difficult time for you and your family. You are in my thoughts.

Blairsville has a no kill shelter. Take your dog there. It is a few miles past Home depot!

Thank you guys for the support. I just couldn't do it. I kept looking at her last night and couldn't bring myself to do it. Ima...THANK YOU!!! I will look into that shelter. My XH also has stepped forward and is trying to get her medicine and said that he would take her. She didn't have this problem as often at the old houses(where he is currently living). So maybe it will all work out.

Same thing happened to my dog. Paid $400.00 for allergy test (complete food & environment testing)- turns out she was allergic to carrot & egg. Removed these items from her diet and she is slowly regrowing hair. She too lost all her hair- my dog is a 4 year old Yorkie.

I'm glad things are looking up!
