Need to learn to balance...

February 23rd, 2010 at 02:27 pm

It seems that whenever I have money sitting in my checking account, I try to find a place for it. I either pay extra on my credit cards or move it to savings. Doesn't sound bad, right? Except for more often than not, I end up needing that money for something. I can't just let it sit in my account. It is just burning a hole in my computer for it to be there. I need to learn how to let money sit in my checking account. I am so not used to having any money in my checking account that it feels wierd to let money sit in there.

Hmm...maybe as a transitional mindset, you could have money sitting in the account that you're planning to put into savings or toward the credit card in two weeks, if it isn't needed by next payday. That way, you want to not touch it because it does have a future home--it's not just sitting there screaming "Spend me!"--but it is there if a genuine NEED arises before payday. And, you get acclimated to/better at letting money just sit in the account.

That's why I let extra money sit in checking until payday -- then I transfer it to savings. It keeps me mindful that every little bit of spending I do will make that deposit to savings smaller. But it's there if I need it.

this might not work for everyone, but you can use your creditcard instead of checks, pay your CC out of savings with electronic transfers. Some banks may not let you do ACH (or whatever it's called) out of your savings, but my credit union does.
