Newbie

November 11th, 2008 at 08:40 pm

I intend to used this blog to keep up with my daily spending habits. I have a hard time not spending money even when I shouldn't. My credit cards are all over the limit and I am behind on the payments. I haven't done a "real" grocery trip in a couple of months...we have food, but not what we want. But yet I always find the money to get a bagel and coke on the way to work in the morning.

I need to make myself realize what I spend...and maybe putting it in writing will help me do that.

We have a lot in common Smile
I have a LOT of trouble with overspending, it's a very hard habit to break. Something that helped me was to fill a binder with pages that are dated, and has categories like breakfast, lunch, dinner, and other, then a section for totals at the end of the day. Just try really hard to write down every cent that you spend..knowing exactly where your money goes seems to be a big help, then you can pick out where, if any, you can cut back on expenses.

The envelope system might help you. You divide your cash in to specific categories like grocery, eating out, lunch money, etc. You put cash in the envelopes and when it's gone it's gone.

Just a thought but good luck!!

Thank you for your support and ideas. I have thought of both of these options. I know where I need to cut back, but I am hoping that if I see it, it will be more real to me. I use Quicken but am sorry to say that I don't use it to its full capabilities. That is also one of my goals.

Welcome! I hope your blog helps you be more accountable. Maybe you could start by posting how much you spend tomorrow. Seriously! If you have to post it, will you spend as much?

You sound like me! The good news is that you can turn this around fairly quickly. Just take it one step at a time. One of the biggest things that helps me save money is organizng my kitchen and taking "inventory." Know exactly what is in your kitchen, down to every little spice. And of course, PLAN all your meals. This saves me SO much money! Good luck, I'll be looking forward to your posts!

Lack of planning is my downfall. Food is definately where I need to improve my budget. I am a single mom with 2 very active kids.(soccer twice a week, cheerleading twice a week and violin once a week). Most of the time, Wednesdays are the only nights that I get home before 9:00. I need to plan snacks in the car and prepare alot of crock pot meals so dinner is ready when we get home, but the plannng to do this is where I fall short.
