My Dad is not doing well

August 16th, 2011 at 02:48 pm

He was transported to the hospital yesterday morning for having alot of confusion and being lethargic. In my non professional opinion I think he may have had a small stroke. Those don't show up from what I have been told. Anyway, they sent him home. He is like a child. He doesn't seem to know where he is or what is going on. he is fighting everything my mom tries to do for him. He can't stand up or walk to the bathroom. He is like dead weight. It took three of us to get him in the house and four of us to get him in his chair. My mom can't continue to take care of him. I am afraid that he is going to have to go into a nursing home. I can't imagine what my poor mom is going through. They have been married for 58 years. As hard as it is on me, It is probably twice as hard on her.

Big surprise...the renters didn't contact me yesterday to get me the rest of the rent. Maybe they will today. Just have too much else on my mind.

I am sorry (hugs) that you're dealing with this. Is it possible to hire someone a few hours a day to help with your dad's care (bathing and moving around). Do you have a wheel chair? Can you check on craigslist to see about a used chair that can help lift someone to a standing position?

Renters ... I've got my own who owes me two months rent, but she's been a solid payer that past year (under the threat of a 5-Day Notice to Evict), but she's starting to be late again.

We have a wheel chair but the problem is getting him in the chair. He won't help at all. And then getting him into the car will be a trick since there are stairs. He already has one of those chairs that lift him into a standing position. Problem is he is too weak to stand and assist anyone trying to help him. Plus he fights everything we try to do for him.

Can you maybe rent a hoyer lift (I think those are what they are called), and I'm not quite sure how they work. I know we used them in the hospital I worked at for non-ambulatory patients. Maybe the hospital geriatric social worker might have some ideas to help avoid a nursing home.

    Hang in there.

What did the doctors say at the hospital? Is he going to be further evaluated?

The hospital said that it was just his confusion(which he has had for a while now) and that there wasn't anything the could do for him. They took scans and said that he hadn't had a stroke. My mom has beenon the phone with advocate for the elderly in this area to see about getting him appraised. He has an appointment tomorrow with his neurologist but I am not sure how we are going to get him there.

I'm so sorry ... I can't imagine how hard it must be, especially on top of everything else. You're clearly a strong woman but this would be a lot for anyone to take all at once. Frown All I can do is give my sympathy and best wishes for your dad!

You will be in my prayers. It was hard for my mom when we had to put my dad in a home, but it was the right decision. I hope all goes well and you can get him to the appointment tomorrow.

I am sorry too. It seems like we are never ready for our parents to grow old on us. I know I wasn't.
