Hired a Lawyer

July 27th, 2011 at 07:58 pm

We hired a lawyer yesterday. He called the inspector and gave her all of his contact information. We still don't know what DS will be charged with. If it is a misdemeanor(which is should be) it will be $1500. If they charge him with a felony, it will be $2500. My son was supposed to be calling him today to see what kind of payment plan can be worked out. I am very adament that I want DS to pay the lawyer fees. Problem is that he doesn't have a large sum of money sitting around and neither do I. I have put an email our to my family asking for them to loan him the money. I will then give them back the money as I have access to his checking account. he has direct deposit and I can just transfer to my account and then give to whoever. I know he should have to make the payments but since I am the one "guaranteeing" payment, I like to have control over it. I can then make sure that the payment will be made.

The hardest part is just waiting. Waiting to see what he will be charged with. Waiting to see how much the lawyer charge will be. Waiting to see what will happen. Just wish this was already behind us.

Most lawyers will take payment by credit card. Since DS has a job and is 18, maybe he should apply for a credit card and use that to pay the lawyer.

He can slowly pay down the credit card and truely see how his actions (Not listening to Mom's advice) cost him financially.

It is NOT worth not having a lawyer BUT maybe DS should be feeling the pressure of paying for the lawyer instead of you. Please don't take this the wrong way but maybe he needs a dose of tough love.

He has already applied for a credit card and was denied because he has no credit. And we don't really have time for his to apply/be approved for a credit card.

NGG, I can see how this might be the hardest thing you have ever faced. I'd be needing a sedative.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I hope he is just charged the lessor charge...felony convictions are a heavy burden in life.

In any case, and I mean this in a good way, I hope your son learns a valuable lesson and that this helps him make better decisions in the future.

Dear Lady: You are all in my prayers. This is a nightmare situation, but you are dealing with this better than I would, for sure.

It seems to me lawyer would extend credit, but, who knows. Just seems the few instances I knew someone needed to retain a lawyer, they were given a long time to pay it back. I hope it works out.

Fingers crossed and thinking about you.

Just have faith that everything will work out. You have a very supportive family from what you have posted in the past. I am sure they will rally around you to help you during this dark and scary time.

Force yourself to take care of "you" during this time. If you can find ways to let go of some of the stress you will be in a better position to handle the all the unknowns.

I know several attorneys (and physicians and dentists) who are often willing to work with clients/patients when they have services that lead to significant fees. For the medical types, there is often insurance to offset it, but legal fees are another thing. I hope that this attorney will work with your family so that things work out well for all involved. I really hope that you are able to get some rest and take care of yourself during the stressful time.
